What are some signs that my livestock might have worms?

Keep a close eye on your animals’ behavior and appearance. Signs of a possible worm infestation include weight loss, lethargy, a change in appetite, scouring (diarrhea), pale eyelids and a rough or dull coat. If you suspect worms, bring in a fecal sample for testing so we can identify the type of worms and recommend the most effective drench.

Vaccines work by introducing a weakened or inactive form of a disease-causing organism (like a virus or bacteria) into your animal’s body. This ‘teaches’ their immune system to recognise and fight off the real disease if they ever encounter it. It’s like giving their immune system a practice run, so it’s ready to defend against the actual illness. Vaccines are a crucial part of preventative healthcare and can significantly reduce the risk of disease outbreaks in your herd.

Lick blocks provide a convenient and cost-effective way to supplement your livestock’s diet with essential minerals and trace elements. They can help prevent mineral deficiencies, improve overall health and productivity, and reduce stress on pasture. Choosing the right lick block depends on the type of animal, any mineral deficiencies in your pasture and seasonal requirements. Our team can help you choose the most suitable lick block and provide advice on proper placement and usage.

The frequency of drenching depends on several factors, including the age and type of livestock, the parasite burden on your property and the specific drench being used. For example, on most farms, drenching sheep and calves with effective short-acting, oral combination drenches every 28 days over their first summer and autumn is recommended. Then, the drench interval can be extended to every 6-9 weeks until they reach 15-18 months of age. This strategy helps minimise production losses due to parasites without overusing drench. However, it’s essential to work with a veterinarian or our experienced team to develop a tailored drenching program for your specific needs.

It’s crucial to address this quickly, as newborn calves need colostrum within the first few hours of life for essential antibodies. Ensure the calf is warm and dry, and try offering colostrum or milk replacer with a bottle and teat. If the calf still struggles, consider using an esophageal feeder to ensure they receive adequate nutrition. Monitor for signs of illness like diarrhea or lethargy, and consult with a veterinarian if the problem persists. We also offer electrolytes and other supportive care products for young animals.
